Although the original SKYTRAK is over a decade old, it remains an excellent choice for those with a budget of a few thousand dollars, delivering accuracy resembling commercial systems costing $10,000 or more with access to many features for improving your game. At the current clearance price of $695, this represents exceptional value for budget-conscious home golfers who prioritize indoor practice. However, there is a noticeable shot delay (the time between impact and the shot appearing on screen) that you cannot do much about, and accuracy falls off significantly when used outdoors; in perfect conditions (slightly overcast, artificial turf, no direct sunlight) it may work alright. The original model lacks club data that newer versions provide, making it best suited for casual simulation and practice rather than serious swing analysis.

SKYTRAK is a photometric launch monitor system designed to capture accurate golf ball flight and performance data using high-speed cameras immediately after impact. It was developed for recreational golfers, providing information adequate for golfers looking to practice more effectively and have fun playing simulated golf courses without spending massive amounts of money.
After hitting several thousand balls on SKYTRAK, you get very accurate ball data with an excellent representation of ball flight, spin rates, and carry distances. The ball data is very similar to the GC2 from Foresight Sports, which was shocking considering Foresight launch monitors range from $8,000 - $15,000. The original model tracks ball speed, launch angle, backspin, side spin, and side angle, with estimated carry and total distances.
SKYTRAK works best indoors; outdoors gives the SKYTRAK fits and does not seem to work as well. The device uses a photometric camera system with a ~4" x 4" hitting zone, requiring less space than radar-based launch monitors and working well in a home simulator environment with limited ball flight distance.
The software has been made quite robust since launch, with the quality of the software making the unit so valuable—they've done a fantastic job of clearly displaying data in a meaningful way. The unit is backed by a 6-month warranty or 25,000 shots, whichever comes first, covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal use.
